Donald Trump Addresses Detroit Economic Club
Former President Donald Trump visited Detroit on Thursday, speaking at a Detroit Economic Club event held at the Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel.
The speech marked Trump’s second address to the DEC, his first taking place in August 2016 a few weeks after first securing the Republican nomination for president.
Trump’s spoke for about an hour and 45 minutes before a question-and-answer session with businessman John Rakolta Jr., who was also formerly the US Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates during the Trump administration between 2019 and 2021.
During his speech, Trump unveiled a planned policy to make interest on car loans fully deductible. He also announced his intention to renegotiate the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA), which contains a provision regarding the three countries reviewing the agreement every six years.
Trump also stated, in regards to Vice President Kamala Harris, “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president”. The remarks drew quick responses from Democratic politicians in the state, including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who stated “Detroiters won’t forget this in November”.
Thursday’s event, which had several hundred in attendance, came with 26 days to go until the 2024 presidential election.
