Mary Sheffield Announces Run for Mayor of Detroit

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield announced her candidacy for mayor of Detroit on Tuesday, entering the race ahead of the November 2025 election

Incumbent Mayor Mike Duggan, who is currently in his third term as mayor, announced last month that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term. He subsequently announced his candidacy for Governor of Michigan in early December, running to succeed term-limited incumbent Governor Gretchen Whitmer, whose current term ends in January 2027

Sheffield's announcement was made Tuesday evening at IBEW Local 58. The event featured speeches from community members, entrepreneurs, and members of Sheffield's family, as well as a performance by the Detroit Youth Choir. Sheffield answered questions from the media following her announcement

The mayoral election will be held on November 4th, 2025
